World city in a class of its own
Surrounded by a spellbinding landscape of lakes, rivers, forests and parks, green islands and historic castles, the cosmopolitan city of culture, politics, media and science offers a quality of life that defies all international comparison. This harmonious combination of urban infrastructure and the experience of natural landscapes, of museums of national renown and individual neighbourhood culture, makes Berlin attractive for both old residents and newcomers, who come from all over the world. Students, scientists, artists and cosmopolitans are thrilled by the city’s colourful authenticity, which offers prospects for every kind of lifestyle and boasts a stable economy.
It is not for nothing that Berlin is considered one of the leading locations for the information and creative industries in Europe. Advertising, market research, software development, film and broadcasting, but also the art market and the design and architecture industry, play an outstanding role. As a strong-selling location for trade fair and congresses, the metropolis attracts regular flows of visitors. Students, entrepreneurs and investors also find a diverse educational and research landscape that, coupled with commercial sites and technology strongholds, boasts excellent prospects for the future.
Neighbourhood with history
Not only “alternative scene” but also “political radicalism” and “gentrification” have long been buzzwords associated with the area. Today, away from Berlin’s tourist centre, Kreuzberg celebrates the peaceful alliance of bourgeois life, artistic intellectualism and unvarnished city flair – and for years now, 1st May has been celebrated as a peaceful “Myfest” in the best carnival tradition, by residents and visitors alike. Nevertheless, despite all the changes, Kreuzberg is one of the most multicultural districts in Berlin, which is reflected above all in the range of gastronomic delights on offer, characterised especially by the large Turkish community.
Named after the 66 metre-high Kreuzberg hill in Viktoriapark, the neighbourhood with the Landwehr Canal, Checkpoint Charlie, the former newspaper district and famous museums is home to some notable places of historic interest. As part of the Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg district of Berlin, it also offers many green havens of relaxation, whether in Volkspark Friedrichshain, the area around the Admiralbrücke, in Görlitzer Park or by the waterfall in Viktoriapark. The nearby Park am Gleisdreieck, which for a long time was just a neglected piece of land, is now one of the most popular parks in Berlin.
